ABOUT SHANTUNG SILK
Shantung is one of the most prized and sought-after silks. Its story begins in ancient China, in the province of Shandong, which gave the fabric its name. Ours comes from Como, still the meeting point between East and West for the finest silks in the world.
Shantung is spun from a double silk filament, produced when two silkworms spin a single cocoon together – a rare event, and the reason this silk is so precious. Technically it begins as an irregularity; yet precisely these irregularities – the characteristic slubs, nubs and knots in the yarn – give every shantung tie its unmistakable, one-of-a-kind texture.
Shantung silk is also durable and hard-wearing. Its surface is subtly textured and soft to the touch, with a delicate, shifting sheen. Warm in winter and cool in summer, it is hypoallergenic and equally at home by day or by night, at formal occasions as well as relaxed, smart-casual ones.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TIE
After wearing, untie the knot and either lay your tie flat in a drawer (folded in half at most) or hang it on a tie hanger in your wardrobe.
Never wash a silk tie in the washing machine or with water: have it professionally dry-cleaned. Do not iron it, either dry or with steam. To refresh the fibres and relax the creases from wear, you can direct a jet of steam at it from a distance.
